New books!

"Diary of a wimpy kid: a novel in cartoons" by Jeff Kinney

First things first. Boys do not have diaries. Girls have diaries. Let's get that straight cause things could get messy if we don't. Basically, what we have here are the gathered thoughts and memories of Greg Haffley. Greg's got a pretty average life, all things considered. His older brother is a jerk, his younger brother annoying, his best friend a doofus, and his parents perfect dweebs. To top it all off, Greg's been thrown into his first year of middle school and things are really weird. Suddenly friendships are shifting and Greg's not sure who he wants to be. Add in some haunted houses, wrestling, downhill games involving bodily injury, forbidden cheese, and basic family fears and you've got yourself one heckuva debut.

"Cam's Quest: The Continuing Story of Princess Nevermore and the Wizard's Apprentice" by Dian Curtis Regan
Cam's Quest is the sequel to Dian Curtis Regan's Princess Nevermore. Cam's Quest follows Princess Quinn, aka Princess Nevermore, and Cam, the former Wizard's Apprentice, as they each seek their destiny. Quinn and Cam have both been raised in the underground kingdom of Mandria, one in which both magical and Medieval customs dominate.

"Kurt Cobain: Oh Well, Whatever, Nevermind" by Jeff Burlingame

Written by a high-school acquaintance of Kurt Cobain, this biography in the new American Rebels series is an unusually intimate account of the rock legend. A resident of Cobain's hometown, Aberdeen, WA, Burlingame supports his well-researched portrait with personal interviews with Cobain's family, friends, and other local acquaintances. His descriptions of Cobain's darker struggles, such as drug use, are frank, and he occasionally interrupts the text with a few didactic cautions about drug use. He also delves into controversial theories about Cobain's death, including a key investigator's belief that Cobain was murdered. Thorough endnotes, a well-rounded bibliography, and a discography conclude this detailed title, which stands out from many series biographies because of its insider's appreciation for the musician and his legacy

"Edenville owls" By Robert Parker

There is something evil in the air. Fourteen-year-old Bobby senses it. Who is that man he saw arguing with his pretty new English teacher? And what was the real reason she missed school for days afterward? Bobby knows he should mind his own business, but times are confusing. World War II has just ended and the world is changing. Bobby’s world, especially. There’s his relationship with Joanie, for one—why does being her friend feel awkward all of a sudden? And then there are his buddies, the junior varsity Edenville Owls—a group of basketball players in need of a leader. Can they help each other off the court as well as they can on it? They will need to. Something evil is in the air.

Too, there are Martin’s memories; the sudden appearance of famed Soviet defector Igor Gouzensko; and Martin’s shady boss Randy. And worst of all, Gerty's grandfather is being robbed by Randy, with Martin forced to act as his accomplice. Martin’s happiness, his sense of duty, and his love for Gerty collide.

"Hattie Big Sky" by Kirby Larson

Alone in the world, teen-aged Hattie is driven to prove up on her uncle's homesteading claim. For years, sixteen-year-old Hattie's been shuttled between relatives. Tired of being Hattie Here-and-There, she courageously leaves Iowa to prove up on her late uncle's homestead claim near Vida, Montana. New books!

"13 little blue envelopes" by Maureen Johnson

Seventeen-year-old Ginny had always admired her aunt Peg, a free-spirited artist who often disappeared for months, most recently to Europe. Now Aunt Peg has died of brain cancer, and in a characteristically cryptic gesture made before her death, she arranged for her niece to receive a plane ticket to London, where Ginny will begin a series of adventures. Guided by Peg's friends and the instructions in each of 13 letters her aunt wrote, Ginny sets off across Europe. Staying with Peg's contacts or in hostels, Ginny begins to peel away some of the mythic layers surrounding her aunt, even as she falls into thrilling escapades and a blossoming romance

"Rash" by Pete Hautman

In 2076 in the United Safer States of America, verbal abuse, obesity, and dangerous activities are against the law. The penalty for breaking any of the rules is a lengthy prison term, and 24 percent of the population is incarcerated and responsible for doing much of the country's manual labor–without pay. For Bo Marsten, 16, the punishment for allegedly spreading a rash through school is a prison sentence, which is suspended, but he then goes to jail for lack of self-control after he hits a classmate. Bo has the opportunity to reduce his sentence when he's chosen for the prison's (illegal) football team, but the sadistic coach is determined that his players win at any cost

"Palms to the ground" by Amy Stolls

In this debut novel, eighth-grader Calman Pulowitz makes a life-changing trip from Boston to Walla Walla, Washington, to visit his pen pal. Overprotected, paranoid, and in therapy since he was seven, Calman is unprepared for Rizzy Dickson (a girl!) and her large, nonchalant, but close-knit family. Rizzy, as unstructured and freewheeling as Calman is uptight, introduces him to physical activity (including fighting), liquor, girls, and true friendship.

"Capt Hook: the adventures of a notorious youth" by J.V. Hart

When he enters England's storied Eton school as a teen, James (the future Hook) has never known his mother and has only met his aristocratic father a few times. He channels his loneliness and rage into superior scholarship, plotting wild "devices of revenge" against sadistic classmates. At last, he escapes to the high seas, but he unwittingly boards a slave ship that reveals horrifying brutality and family secrets.

He has a prosthetic leg and a gruff manner, but it's obvious that he and his nephew get along really well. You can't blame Gabe for not knowing that Vernon would have secrets. So one day, Gabe comes home from school and Uncle Vernon's dead on the floor. Well what would you do? You can't blame the kid for not wanting to deal with the situation. The next morning he goes to school like usual and tries not to think about what to do. When he gets home, there's a note in the mailbox. On one side it says, "I have a secret". On the other side it says, "Do not be afraid". But when Gabe comes into the house and finds his uncle's body has disappeared, he is afraid. Very.

And it’s Creel who walks for days on end to seek her fortune in the king’s city with only a bit of embroidery thread and a strange pair of slippers in her possession. But even Creel could not have guessed the outcome of this tale. New Library Cats!

Have you met the new library cats? Allow them to introduce themselves....

"Hi, My name is Waldo, I am a gray tabby. I am about 6 months old and I was adopted from PAWs. I am curious and energetic. My people say I like getting into trouble, but I just want to know everything I can about my new home. I will scratch so you might want to play with me with a toy."

"Hi, My name is Olivia. I am a black female cat, and I'm about 10 months old. Unlike, my fellow library cat, I am very calm and I know that I am lucky to live here so I try to obey the rules. I am sweet and I will let you pet me, I NEVER scratch!"

New books

"Jeremy Fink and the meaning of life" by Wendy Mass

The summer he turns 13, Jeremy receives a mysterious box with the engraved words "the meaning of life: for Jeremy Fink on his thirteenth birthday." The box was left by his father, who has been dead for five years. It has four locks, but Jeremy finds no keys to open them. As Jeremy and his best friend, Lizzy, embark on a quest to find the keys, they travel across Manhattan from flea markets to fancy office buildings and museums, searching, as it turns out, not only for keys but also insights into science, religion, art, friendship, and family.

"Sloppy firsts" by Megan McCafferty

When her best friend, Hope Weaver, moves away from Pineville, New Jersey, hyperobservant sixteen-year-old Jessica Darling is devastated. A fish out of water at school and a stranger at home, Jessica feels more lost than ever now that the only person with whom she could really communicate has gone. How is she supposed to deal with the boy- and shopping-crazy girls at school, her dad’s obsession with her track meets, her mother salivating over big sister Bethany’s lavish wedding, and her nonexistent love life?

"Second helpings" by Megan McCafferty

Jessica Darling, the lovably cynical heroine of Sloppy Firsts (2001), is about to begin her final year of high school. She is not looking forward to it. Her best friend, Hope, has moved away, leaving her with only budding-movie-star Bridget to confide in. She also is doing her best to forget Marcus Flutie, the oh-so-sexy guy who captured her heart the year before, only to break it. Jessica has resolved to apply to Columbia University, but after the 9/11 attack, she's doubly certain her parents won't hear of her going to school in New York City. She's flattered by the attentions of Len Levy, a hot brainiac, who just might be the one to drive Marcus from her mind
