We have all six books in the series, the first one is "Marked"

Mortal Instruments trilogy by Cassandra Clare

The first book is "City of Bones"

When Clary Fray witnesses three tattoo-covered teenagers murder another teen, she is unable to prove the crime because the victim disappears right in front of her eyes, and no one else can see the killers. She learns that the teens are Shadowhunters (humans who hunt and kill demons), and Clary, a mundie (i.e., mundane human), should not be able to see them either. Shortly after this discovery, her mother, Jocelyn, an erstwhile Shadowhunter, is kidnapped. Well the Teen Summer Reading Program is over for another summer. I hope everyone that took part had a great time. The finale auction was on Friday, August 22nd, and participants bid on great prizes from local businesses that donated; Ace Hardware, Alec’s by the Sea, Beach Treasures Gifts & Coffee, Box Office Rentals, The Book Hut, Dugan’s Pizza, Gallery Marjuli, Jully Rodgers Toys & Gifts, Lucky Dragon, McDonald’s, Monica’s, Ocean Shores Cinemas, Ocean Shores IGA, Pacific Paradise Family Fun Center, Shores Bowl, Subway, Taco & Espresso D’Light, Tsunami Beads. We had 45 of you sign up for the TSRP and you read 115 books totaling 36,663 pages. 51 teens attended the three programs. I hope you will all sign up again next summer, it will be even better!

Book review!

Try taking three totally different girls, from very different scenarios who hardly have anything at all in common...and cramming them together. Alice, Molly and Reena have but three things in common with each other; Being 15 years old, having a nack for hating their evil stepmothers, and having to attend Putnam Mount McKinsey, a seemingly post boarding school that lays along a scenic route against the mountains, thats not even the start of it.

Finding out how these girls end up here is in your hands. Revenge, hate, and a taste of first romance, and finding out the meaning of forgiveness and friendship all lay in the words of "Poison Apples" written by Lily Archer. The moral? No one on this planet seem to be what they really are, and first impressions realistically don't matter. A great novel with good viewpoints from each girl that deserves to be read. Maybe you should take a taste of Lily Archers, "Poison Apples!"

The Murder Mystery Night was alot of fun! 21 teens showed up to try out their detecting skills and the grand prize winner was Anthony Hill. Runner's up were Evan Whipple and Narvarre Kerr. Much thanks goes out to: the Ocean Shores Friends of the Library for sponsoring the Teen Summer Reading Program, Bill and Shannon of NBTV for filming and editing the 'Suspect Interviews' and Officer P High of the Ocean Shores Police Department for being our tough interrogation officer. **Staff Pick** I read this book and I LOVED it! If you like creepy, suspenseful, exciting, books with a little humor thrown in, read this book. It is the story of 17 year old Duncan. He just got a job in a subway lost and found. It is a boring job, and not the way he wants to pass his last summer of high school. One day while working, he finds a strange leather book, with no title. He looks inside and finds out, its the journal of a psychopathic killer! This killer is using the subway to stalk women that he plans on killing. Duncan decides he can find the women and warn them. When that doesn't work, he thinks maybe, with the help of his friends, he can find the killer and stop him. What if the killer finds him first? "Acceleration" by Graham McNamee. If you like to listen to books on CD, we have this one in that format also. ----Michelle Olson

"Beyond cool" by Bev Katz Rosenbaum. This is the sequel to "I was a teenage popsicle" Apparently being frozen for ten years hasn't made Floe any cooler... The next in the hot series about a girl whose life is really on the rocks. Floe Ryan was frozen at sixteen because of a rare disease. Now she's been thawed back to her normal self-but everything else has changed: her little sister's older than her, her teachers are holograms, and she's learning to drive a hovercar. Plus, with her boyfriend acting distant and having to deal with all the cliques, high school is becoming an even colder place. She's also learned that those who were frozen are susceptible to illnesses, and the one doctor who can cure them has gone AWOL. Floe must find him. But she's learning that someone might be hunting for her too-and she could be iced for good this time.

Teen Summer Reading Program Auction

Friday, August 24th, the last program of the TSRP was held. We had an auction of all the prizes donated by local businesses. Everyone had a great time bidding and there were some bidding wars. It was Michelle's first time as auctioneer and she appreciated everyone's patience! The auction was a hit and we will do it again next year! This year 36 teens signed up and read over 120 books!

Teen Summer Reading Kick Off Party!

The next event is the Murder Mystery Night, Saturday, July 28th at 9pm. It will be at the library and the participants will help solve a 'murder' to win prizes.

"Diary of a wimpy kid: a novel in cartoons" by Jeff Kinney

First things first. Boys do not have diaries. Girls have diaries. Let's get that straight cause things could get messy if we don't. Basically, what we have here are the gathered thoughts and memories of Greg Haffley. Greg's got a pretty average life, all things considered. His older brother is a jerk, his younger brother annoying, his best friend a doofus, and his parents perfect dweebs. To top it all off, Greg's been thrown into his first year of middle school and things are really weird. Suddenly friendships are shifting and Greg's not sure who he wants to be. Add in some haunted houses, wrestling, downhill games involving bodily injury, forbidden cheese, and basic family fears and you've got yourself one heckuva debut.

9 people played in the Texas Hold 'Em Poker Tournament and had a great time. Thanks to staff member Stephanie for being a dealer. Also thanks to Chris Larson, TAB member for dealing. The TAB sponsored the event and bought the food and drinks. The TAB also purchased the grand prize, a plaque and candy. Hope to see everyone at our next event. 3. Poetry is limited to 3 poems (3 entries) per person. There is a maximum of 5 pages total per person. Each poem requires a separate entry fee.

4. The entry fee for students aged 18 years (or younger) is $5.00 per entry

Everyone had a great time at the Teen Summer Reading Finale...the final numbers are, 17 kids read their three books and got prizes from McDonalds and Beach Treasures coffe. 40 local teens signed up and read over 75 books. The people that attended the finale got great prizes in the drawings from local businesses, and Evan Whipple walked away with the Harry Potter set. The winners of the "Make a Monster" contest were Zach Brady, Navarre Kerr, and Skyler Whipple. The prizes included a coupon for a free 6 inch sub courtesy of Subway, a coupon for a game of bowling from Shores Bowl and candy. The winners made a very scary monster using most of the materials available. The judges were Dave Weiser, City Manager; Gene Swygard, Friends of the Library Treasurer; and Betty Smith of the Library Board of Trustees. "Identity Crisis" Brad Meltzer

After the tragic death of Sue Debny, the wife of the Elongated Man, the members of the Justice League of America and most of the DC superheroes are brought together to investigate. Sues murder is unsettling for a couple of reasons: she was a friend, and whoever committed the crime knew enough personal information to be able to sneak past security. Even more troubling are the letters that the family members of other heroes receive, indicating that they are the next targets. The superheroes split into teams to follow the leads that they are most suited to solve. The novel asks: how far do you go to protect your loved ones? What if everything you stand for goes against your need to protect your family?

Roy Eberhardt is the new kid--again. This time around it's Trace Middle School in humid Coconut Grove, Florida. But it's still the same old routine: table by himself at lunch, no real friends, and thick-headed bullies like Dana Matherson pushing him around. But if it wasn't for Dana Matherson mashing his face against the school bus window that one day, he might never have seen the tow-headed running boy. And if he had never seen the running boy, he might never have met tall, tough, bully-beating Beatrice. And if he had never met Beatrice, he might never have discovered the burrowing owls living in the lot on the corner of East Oriole Avenue. And if he had never discovered the owls, he probably would have missed out on the adventure of a lifetime. Apparently, bullies do serve a greater purpose in the scope of the universe. Because if it wasn't for Dana Matherson.

Review by: Haley, 7th grade. Review of the book "Defiance" by Vallary Hobbs.
******SIX STARS! "Toby is normal, I guess. Besides the fact that he has cancer. On vacation with his mom, his dad is only able to see him on weekends. Toby is away for three weeks at the cabin "resort". Hes sly, so he leaves early and goes for a bike ride. He comes across a cow. Later, he finds out the cows name is Blossom, but right now, all he knows is this cow is SKINNY! So, with his courage, he travels down a dirt road to a broken down home. A gunfire...why a gunfire???Toby runs, but returns the next day with Cheerios for the friendly cow, and trys it again with the home this time. Someone answers...I read this book in one sitting. Its a gripping, emotional, and very heartaching! 6 stars. %110 amazing!"

"Brady is Jewish, is a teenage girl living in Washington D.C., USA. Her mom takes her to Europe instead of doing a bar mitzvah. They go to many different places. On the cruise ship there are teen parties every night. There is love, embarrassment, humility, and tons of fun!! I couldn't put this book down plus its written in letters from Brady to her best friend. Bradys best friend wrote four things that Brady has to do in Europe. Thus, the humiliation. You'll know what I mean. Read the book. If you're like me, you'll be walking down the hallways at school bumping into people...because you can't put this book

"Four things my geeky-jock-of-a-best-friend must do in Europe" by Jane Harrington

What's black and huge and written all over my--Hand? Instructions from my dear, darling best friend Delia. Instructions to do four things I would never, ever in a million years do. But I have to. Just because dumb, old me promised Delia I'd pull off each one while I'm on this wacked-out Mediterranean cruise with mio madre (i.e. my mother.) At least I'm keeping some sanity by writing letters to Delia all about my thrilling adventures, including the episodes about the other teens on the cruise ship. Delia would SO love these guys from all over the world--maybe even the ones from another planet (well, maybe NOT). And if she WERE here, maybe she could help me find once of those code-red Euro-hotties she SWEARS are easy to spot. (One of those four things on my hand.) Four things. Sounds easy, huh? WHATEVER.

"Ask my no questions" Marina Budhos

Nadira, 14, relates how her family left Bangladesh, came to the U. S. on a tourist visa, and stayed long after the visa expired ("Everyone does it. You buy a fake social security number for a few hundred dollars and then you can work."). Their illegal status is discovered, however, following 9/11, when immigration regulations are tightened. When the family hurriedly seeks asylum in Canada, they are turned back, and Nadira's father, Abba, is detained because his passport is no longer valid. The secrets are dramatic ("Go to school. Never let anyone know. Never."), and so are the family dynamics, especially Nadira's furious envy of her gifted older sister, Aisha. But Aisha breaks down, and Nadira must take over the struggle to get Abba out of detention and prevent the family's deportation.

Halo 2 Video Game Tournament 12/3/05

The Teen Advisory Board hosted a Halo 2 Video Game Tournament on Saturday, December 3rd, 2005. A great time was had by all 12 participants. The winners were: 1st place, Steve Sanden; 2nd place, Juan Martinez; 3rd place, Andrew Snyder; and Bonus Round Winner, Dylan Hearn. Prizes were provided by the following local businesses and we thank them for their support; Ace Hardware, Shores Bowl and Ocean Shores Cinemas. Keep checking this website for future teen events at the library. Thanks to TAB members Chris, Robby and Evan for planning, setting up, and executing the tournament! If you have a suggestion for a good teen program or event, come to the next Teen Advisory Board meeting on March 11th at 3pm at the Library.

Friesen sketches three-dimensional secondary characters with problems, flaws, and their own unique wisdom.

"Double Identity" by Margaret Peterson Haddix YA FIC Had

One October evening, Bethany's parents drive her to another state to stay with an aunt she never knew existed. Left confused and without a way to contact her parents, the 12-year-old tries to figure out the reason behind their strange behavior and learns some family secrets in the process. It turns out that she is the clone of her sister, who was killed years earlier in a tragic automobile accident, and she is being hunted by a man who wants to expose her secret existence for his own benefit. Although there is not much action, the twists and turns of the suspense-filled plot are more than enough to keep readers interested. When one question is answered, another one is raised. Readers will relate to Bethany's feelings of abandonment, as well as her struggle to set herself apart from the sister she never knew but with whom she shares so much.

"Small steps" Louis Sachar YA FIC Sac

This sequel to "Holes" (Farrar, 1998) focuses on Armpit, an African-American former resident of Tent D at Camp Green Lake. It's two years after his release, and the 16-year-old is still digging holes, although now getting paid for it, working for a landscaper in his hometown of Austin, TX. He's trying to turn his life around, knowing that everyone expects the worst of him and that he must take small steps to keep moving forward. When X-Ray, his friend and fellow former detainee at the juvenile detention center, comes up with a get-rich-quick scheme involving scalping tickets to a concert by teenage pop star Kaira DeLeon, Armpit fronts X-Ray the money. He takes his best friend and neighbor, Ginny, a 10-year-old with cerebral palsy, to the concert and ends up meeting Kaira, getting romantically involved, and finally becoming a hero by saving her life when her stepfather tries to kill her and frame him.
